Learn how to measure, anchor, level and seal an aluminium window for reliable operation, weather protection and lasting renovation results.

How to Install an Aluminium Window Correctly

Correct aluminium window installation depends on accurate measurements, a stable frame, controlled fixing and continuous weather sealing. For renovation work in Spain or France, always confirm the current local requirements and the manufacturer’s instructions before starting.

Professional installation of an aluminium window
A carefully prepared opening and correctly supported frame are essential for a durable result.

1. Measure the opening accurately

Measure width and height at several points, checking both diagonals and the condition of the sill. Allow the installation joint specified by the window manufacturer; do not assume the opening is perfectly square. Remove loose material and repair weak masonry before positioning the frame.

2. Handle and anchor the frame

StageGood practice
HandlingLift the frame with clean gloves, keep it supported and avoid pressure on corners, glazing beads or drainage paths.
FixingUse approved anchors or fixing screws at the manufacturer’s recommended points, with suitable packers and substrates.
Common mistakesDo not drill through thermal-break elements, overtighten fixings, or rely on expanding foam as structural support.

3. Level, seal and make final adjustments

Set the frame on load-bearing packers, then check plumb, level, diagonals and reveal position. Tighten fixings progressively without distorting the profiles. Protect the thermal break from drilling, crushing and excessive heat. Seal the perimeter in compatible layers: interior air control, insulated joint filling and exterior weather protection. Keep drainage channels open. After glazing or hanging the sash, adjust hinges, rollers, handles and locks, then test smooth operation and compression.

  • Confirm opening dimensions, diagonals, sill strength and required installation gap.
  • Prepare approved packers, anchors, sealants and tools before lifting the frame.
  • Support the frame correctly and fix it without twisting or overtightening.
  • Check level, plumb, diagonals, sash clearance and drainage paths.
  • Protect the thermal break and seal the interior and exterior joints continuously.
  • Perform a final operation, water-shedding and visual inspection.
Can expanding foam fix an aluminium window?+
No. Foam can help insulate the joint, but it should not replace mechanical anchors and load-bearing packers.
How much installation gap is needed?+
The correct joint depends on the frame, movement, substrate and sealing system. Follow the manufacturer’s installation data rather than using a universal gap.
Why does the sash rub after installation?+
The frame may be out of square, distorted by fixings or require hardware adjustment. Recheck diagonals and alignment before adjusting the hardware.
Should I install the window myself?+
Simple replacements may be manageable for an experienced installer, but complex openings, heavy units and waterproofing interfaces are best handled by a professional.
